The different varities of produce we have to offer you changes from week to week around here! Seasons change, weather changes, personal preferences change, and different kinds of bugs come and go! Hate those bugs! Everything has a cycle and we offer this page so that you can see at a week's glance what's in and what's out! PEACH CROP IS LOOKING GREAT! BERRIES, TOO!
Summer is nearly here! Opening weekend will be May 15th, pushed back due to crops. You may be asking yourself, "Why aren't they open yet?"! Early in the season, before Mark's crops (remember the produce Mark raises are all field grown) are mature and ready to sell, he purchases the produce from other growers who are friends and who live way to the south. Their product matures several weeks before Mark's is ready to pick. And later in the season, when it is too hot 'down South' for these fellow growers to produce, they purchase from Mark! It has worked out lovely for the past 8 years! But, "Houston, we have a problem" now. These fellow growers - at least three of our main buds - have gone out of the business. Why? Simple economics, that's why. No one wants to work as hard as a farmer works; put in the seven day work weeks and 14 hour days, battle labor shortages, battle bugs and fungus, battle the weather, and then make little to no money. Remember, here in Texas, small produce operations are NOT subsidized. Most of us are not afforded insurance for our crops. And when I say small, I mean 30 to 100 acres. We are not corporate farms. We all still do it the old way - by hand, not by very expensive equipment. And this may be our downfall. So our fellow growers have quit the business. And others that we hear from have quit and sold their water rights. Sad, but very so. So we are back to our own basics. For those of you who do not know this yet, the "kitchen" will be going through some changes. We are sliding back to our original concept of ice cream and cobblers. No cookies, no pies. Time to simplify my life, well, somewhat. In other words, I can no longer work 82 hours per week - for five months.
